Tsumami zaiku activity in Singapore

Hello!
I am Juveina Sim, ITA Certified Teacher from Singapore,
also known as Jing静 from Jing Creations Sg.

On 18 December 2024, I conducted workshops
under LOST ARTS FOUND residency hosted by Play!
as part of *SCAPE Community Arts Residency Programme 2025.

I thought very hard about the purpose and goals of the workshop sessions.
I think I would like to introduce the traditional method of Tsumami Zaiku.
I would also like to share about the history of Tsumami Zaiku and
the depth of the craft so that participants can have a newfound appreciation
for Tsumami Zaiku and other traditional crafts after the session.

I decided upon a simple design clip with 5 maru-tsumami petals and
5 ken-tsumami petals using cotton and thin silk materials.

I had to be very precise when cutting the fabric because most, if not all,
participants are first-timers to Tsumami Zaiku.

I started the workshop with a very brief introduction to Tsumami Zaiku,
how to make maru-tsumami and ken-tsumami, followed by a demonstration
of using starch glue and chirimen materials.

Due to the short duration of the workshop, the hands-on activity part is done using craft glue method.

I think everyone did very well!

I am happy and grateful for the opportunity to be part of the residency and to introduce Tsumami Zaiku to more people.

Let’s do more Tsumami Zaiku in 2025!
